The honest case for a kit: buying loose rings means choosing a gauge and a diameter before you know how a weave behaves in the hand, and a wrong guess at a pound of rings is an expensive way to learn. A kit answers that question at a much smaller stake.

Once you know the weave you want, move to loose jump rings by the ounce or the pound, and add pliers and clasps as the projects get longer.
