Description
Stormy Gray anodized aluminum jump rings, wound from 14 SWG wire at 5/16 inch inner diameter.
The color is anodized into the surface of the aluminum rather than painted onto it, so closing a ring with pliers will not chip it back to bare metal.
These rings run an aspect ratio of 4 — inner diameter divided by wire thickness. A comfortable all-round ratio. Open enough to weave quickly by hand, tight enough to hold European 4-in-1, and the usual home for Byzantine and half Persian chain.
Fourteen gauge is the heaviest wire in the rack. It holds its shape under its own weight, which is what armor panels and hauberk repairs need, and it wants a firm grip with two pairs of pliers to close flush.
Aluminum weighs roughly a third of what steel does ring for ring, which is why full shirts and long panels get built in it rather than in steel.
